Playa Grande Excursion

After leaving our hotel, we we're dropped off at the airport, where we thought that we could catch a shuttle to playa grande...if only it was that easy. We soon found out that we needed to go into San Jose (20km away) to catch a shuttle that was possibly leaving for Tamarindo. It was right then and there that we made the decision to catch the afternoon airplane instead of trying to go through San Jose. We were very thankful because the flight made the trip 45 min. instead of a 6 hour ride...very nice. After boarding our single engine prop plane that seated only 12 (Rachelle’s first), we landed in tamarindo…barely, the winds were so strong that our pilot nearly missed the runway, but after a few skips and a little dust we finally got to our destination. I was amazed to see the runway paved.

Playa Grande has changed quite a bit since the last time I was here, there has been a lot of development and there are 4 new hotels near the beach. We checked into our apartment at Hotel las Tortugas and got a motorcycle ride to our new home for the week. We have a great room with a full kitchen and a private bathroom and a TV. We then rentured to the beach for some tacos and fun in the waves. We saw a beautiful sunset and played in the waves til dark. We have met some nice people along the way, mostly from the east coast, specifically NY, funny how they want to get away;)

Right now we are just kicking back enjoying some fine cervezas and fish burritos while making our plans for the morning. We are safe and sound and can't wait to settle in to our new home for the week.

We made it!

Buenos dias everyone! We safely arrived in San Jose last night. Getting here however was a bit of a scare. Justin and I were caught by surprise at the check in desk, where we found out a one-way ticket to Costa Rica is no longer feasible for Americans seeking to flee away to paradise with no end in sight. The ticket clerk informed us that we had to have a proof of exit from Costa Rica in order to board the flight. yea...i too thought we were spending a night in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona...good thing we had one get out of jail free card left with Joe...(Thanks pops-Justin) Surprisingly i held my cool in order to keep Justin from breaking a drenched sweat. Or maybe that was just the few bloody marys we had before kicking in, either way it all worked out in the end. Joe let us borrow a credit card to pay for two flights leaving out of Costa Rica into Belize City until we got our travel plans squared away.

Our hotel for the night was warm and pleasant. The free breakfast was certainly tolerable, one fried egg on beans and rice served with bread and fruit. Unfortunately we don't have much else to say about Costa Rica at the moment, seeing as how we arrived in darkness and haven't left our hotel gates yet. Today's agenda is to leave Hotel Mi Tierra in Alajuela and take a certified shuttle bus to the Pacific side, known as Playa Grande. Justin and I plan to relax in this area till the 7th of Feb. But knowing our adventure bug, that all may change over night. We shall keep you all posted. TTYL.
